Premier League clubs face unlicensed gambling firms ban
Summary
The UK government is considering a ban on Premier League clubs being sponsored by betting firms that are not licensed to operate in Britain. While clubs voluntarily agreed to remove gambling sponsors from the front of shirts starting next season, these sponsors can still feature on sleeves and other club assets. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy emphasized that fans deserve to use properly regulated betting sites and that it is inappropriate for unlicensed operators to gain visibility through football sponsorships. Over half of the Premier League’s clubs currently have gambling sponsors, many based overseas, including Aston Villa (Betano) and Brentford (Hollywoodbets). The proposed ban aims to protect vulnerable people from the harms of unregulated gambling and ensure consumers have adequate protections, according to Gambling minister Baroness Twycross.
