Tysons casino bill heads to Gov. Spanberger’s desk
Summary
A bill to authorize a casino in Tysons, Virginia, has passed both houses of the state’s General Assembly for the first time in four years. SB756 would permit a casino within a 1.5 million-square-foot mixed-use development in Fairfax County, contingent upon approval from the county Board of Supervisors and a positive voter referendum. The final version restricts the casino’s location to Tysons specifically, removing previous allowances for other areas within Fairfax County and eliminating a provision for a temporary casino. Governor Abigail Spanberger, while previously indicating openness to the bill with the creation of a state gaming commission, has not yet stated her intentions. However, even if signed into law, the ultimate decision rests with the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, whose chairman, Jeff McKay, currently opposes allowing a voter referendum.
