NSFAS students accused of gambling away TAXPAYER money
Summary
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and the National Gambling Board (NGB) have expressed concern that students are using their financial aid allowances for online gambling, including sports betting and casino-style games. NSFAS provides approximately R5,200 per month to over 811,000 students, totaling R48 billion in funding for the past academic year. This concern arises amidst existing issues of fraud, corruption, and maladministration within NSFAS, with billions of rands in mismanaged funds yet to be recovered. The Finance Minister has even expressed a desire to shut down the scheme due to its problems, but acknowledges the potential for widespread student unrest. The NSFAS is launching awareness campaigns to educate students about the risks of online gambling and the importance of safeguarding public funds.
