Casino at Surrey's Cloverdale fairgrounds sold to First Nation
Summary
Semiahmoo First Nation has agreed to purchase Elements Casino Surrey from Great Canadian Entertainment through its development corporation. The sale requires approval from the City of Surrey, which owns the land but is not included in the transaction. This acquisition is part of a larger trend of Great Canadian selling its BC casino businesses to First Nations, marking their eighth such sale. Great Canadian CEO Matt Anfinson expressed enthusiasm for the deal and future collaboration. Semiahmoo First Nation Chief Harley Chappell highlighted the economic opportunity and community benefits the acquisition will bring. The casino, which generated $58.2 million in revenue in the 2024/2025 fiscal year, operates alongside the Cloverdale fairgrounds, where horse racing was recently discontinued. The City of Surrey plans future mixed-use redevelopment of the fairgrounds.
