The National Gambling Board (NGB) is preparing a report for the National Gambling Policy Council (NGPC) regarding the regulatory and advertising challenges of online gambling in South Africa. Board CEO Lungile Dukwana informed parliament's portfolio committee that the NGB is addressing issues such as bet exchanges and historical loss tracing. The board is also collaborating with the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition to develop a national policy. Dukwana highlighted that increased mobile access has accelerated illegal online gambling and compulsive behavior. The NGB is working with Google and Meta to block websites of unlicensed operators. Despite these challenges, gross gambling revenue is projected to grow significantly, with online betting driving the increase from R23.7bn in 2022/23 to R62.1bn in 2025/26.
