'Misery and loss': long-awaited gambling ad ban panned
Summary
Labor faces internal and external opposition to its long-awaited gambling advertisement reforms, which were introduced three years after a report recommended banning all online gambling ads. The legislation restricts TV gambling ads to three per hour between 6am and 8.30pm and bans them during live sport, as well as banning online ads for under 18s, radio ads during school drop-off times, and gambling promotions by athletes and influencers. Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young criticized the bill, stating, "This is an industry that makes its money off misery and loss." Labor backbencher Louise Miller-Frost acknowledged more needed to be done, while Liberal MP Simon Kennedy, whose friend was a gambling addict, argued for an opt-in system instead of an opt-out. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese defended the legislation as the strongest action any government had taken against gambling advertising in history.
