Esports star Faker is named honorary police constable to promote youth cyber‑gambling prevention in South Korea.

Summary

On 22 July, the Korean National Police Agency held an appointment ceremony in Seodaemun-gu, naming esports legend Lee Sang‑hyeok, known as "Faker", as an honorary police constable and promotional ambassador for cyber‑gambling prevention. The rank of Police Constable, typically awarded to candidates hired through competitive selection for cyber‑investigation roles, was conferred to recognize Faker’s high profile and his role as a disciplined, focused role model for young people. As ambassador, Faker will appear in promotional videos and posters for the Youth Cyber Gambling Voluntary Reporting System, which the agency operates from 18 May to 31 August to facilitate early detection, counseling, treatment, and guidance for youth addicted to online gambling. By July 16, 806 voluntary reports had been received, and those who report are connected to rehabilitation programs after assessments by school police officers and specialized counselors. The agency’s Acting Commissioner General Yoo Jae‑sung emphasized the importance of early detection and counseling, hoping Faker’s influence will encourage hesitant youth to come forward. Faker expressed his honor and responsibility, pledging active participation to raise awareness of the dangers of cyber gambling and the importance of the voluntary reporting system.
