How youth in South-east Asia get hooked on illegal online gambling

The Straits Times
Youth in Southeast Asia are increasingly lured into illegal online gambling via social media, leading to addiction, debt, and crime links.

Summary

The UNODC reports that illegal online gambling has become one of the fastest‑growing dimensions of transnational organised crime in Southeast Asia, especially targeting young people. Criminal syndicates promote gambling apps such as “818 slots” (the “Buffalo” game) through social media platforms, influencers, and encrypted messaging apps, using game‑like reward systems that blur the line between gambling and entertainment. Players fund bets with e‑wallets or cryptocurrencies, making access easy and often unsupervised.

The consequences include mounting debt, vulnerability to recruitment for illicit activities like money‑mule operations, scam centres, and debt collection. In countries with high youth unemployment and low wages—such as Myanmar, where about one in four 15‑35‑year‑olds are unemployed and average earnings are low—many turn to gambling hoping for quick cash. Personal accounts, like that of Myanmar phone‑repair shop owner Myo Thant, illustrate how gambling leads to financial ruin and social breakdown. While Cambodia and Myanmar have carried out crackdowns on scam compounds and blocked gambling sites, the UNODC warns that addressing gambling, fraud, and trafficking in separate silos will fail; an integrated, cooperative approach is needed.
