Mavericks Split Arena Plans From Future Casino Resort
Summary
The Dallas Mavericks are proceeding with plans for a new arena in North Dallas independently of any future casino resort, according to Patrick Dumont, governor of the team and CEO of Las Vegas Sands. The former Valley View Mall site does not have enough room for both an arena and an integrated resort, Dumont told The Athletic. The team is pursuing a sports and entertainment district on about 112 acres near Preston Road and Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway, with a target of the 2031-32 NBA season. Entities connected to the Mavericks control over 100 acres around the demolished mall and have option-purchase agreements through January 2028. The district may include a high-end hotel and a smaller entertainment venue. Dumont emphasized that keeping the Mavericks in Dallas is the priority. Casino development in the Dallas-Fort Worth area depends on changes to Texas law and faces opposition from Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick. The Adelson and Dumont families remain interested in bringing casino gaming to the region, but Dumont now expects the two projects to follow separate paths. Meanwhile, some business figures continue to advocate for a downtown arena location, and ownership issues persist with Mark Cuban retaining a minority stake.
