Sun International launches its own responsible gambling charter
Summary
As the government considers stricter gambling regulation, Sun International has introduced its own Responsible Gambling Charter, setting out how the gaming, hospitality, and entertainment group promotes responsible gambling at its casinos and online platforms. The charter includes marketing restrictions such as not placing time-dependent broadcast or display gambling advertising between 6am and 8am or between noon and 6pm to limit minors' exposure—measures the company says go beyond regulatory requirements. CEO Ulrik Bengtsson told Stephen Grootes that while the gambling industry has evolved rapidly, regulation has not kept pace, and the group wanted to be constructive by creating a framework for stakeholders to hold it accountable. The charter emphasizes practical measures including safety tools and player-control features such as time limits, deposit limits, self-checks, and self-exclusion, which Bengtsson described as the most powerful protections available—like a seatbelt—but only effective if used. It also places restrictions on beneficiaries of SASSA grants and NSFAS funding. Bengtsson said the charter could serve as a foundation for future regulatory thinking, stressing the need for a balance that allows the local industry to flourish while preventing illegal markets from gaining a foothold.
