Truist Securities Flags Long-Term Headwinds for Base Mass-Oriented Macau Casino Operators
Summary
Truist Securities analysts Barry Jonas and Jeremy Jacoby warn that some Macau casino operators face long-term structural headwinds because their properties were built to serve a base mass gaming customer that has not returned in significant numbers. They note that MGM China and Wynn Macau are not exposed to these risks due to their established premium mass positioning. The analysts also highlight limited short-term visibility in Macau, with four consecutive months of year-on-year GGR declines, partly due to lingering World Cup effects and tough comparisons. Separately, J.P. Morgan analysts Daniel Politzer, Samuel Nielsen and Michael Hirsh report that Macau sentiment has worsened, with Q3 GGR down 4% year-on-year and stuck at around 85% of pre-COVID levels. They attribute this to fading hopes for a post-World Cup rebound and growing concerns over China's crackdown on offshore wealth and trusts, as well as the broader macro environment. J.P. Morgan estimates Q4 2026 GGR will fall 6% year-on-year, leading to FY26 GGR growth of just 1% to MOP$249.1 billion (US$30.8 billion).
