Florida gambling helpline director sentenced to nearly 10 years over $1.4m theft to fund addiction
Summary
Philip Sullivan, a 43-year-old Florida man, was sentenced to nine years, eight and a half months in prison after pleading no contest to six felony grand theft charges. As CFO of Royal American, a Panama City Beach real-estate company, he stole $1.4m, which an internal audit revealed through unauthorized credit card transactions. He later became director of the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling's 888-Admit-It helpline in March 2025, a role he described on a podcast as giving him purpose, having spoken with over 460 people facing similar struggles. He attributed his gambling addiction to Adderall prescribed around the time of the thefts, and his gambling escalated from $25 bets to $50,000 wagers, losing over $2m. He was ordered to pay restitution, received credit for 40 days served, and has 30 days to appeal.
