New Jersey strengthens responsible gambling rules
Summary
New Jersey has become the first US state to introduce mandatory data-driven responsible gaming requirements for online gambling operators. Attorney General Jennifer Davenport and the Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) announced that every operator must appoint a responsible gaming lead. Operators must use mandatory customer play thresholds and behavioural triggers to identify at-risk customers, conduct due diligence reviews, and apply three phases of interventions. Governor Mikie Sherrill stated that New Jersey continues to lead in developing data-driven best practices for Internet gaming and online sports wagering. The regulations, now final, respond partly to press reports of aggressive marketing targeting gamblers with signs of disorder. DGE interim director Mary Jo Flaherty said the initiatives reflect DGE's commitment to responsible gaming through practical, proven methods. Additionally, the DGE announced RecoverMe, a free CBT app to help residents manage gambling problems, with New Jersey-specific crisis support. RecoverMe is the second free service, following GamFin financial counselling.
