Evoke urges Chancellor to halt tax raid on gambling firms
Summary
Evoke, the owner of William Hill and the 888 brand, has urged the Chancellor to stop planned tax increases on gambling firms. The company has already been hit by previous tax hikes, including a rise in remote gaming duty from 21% to 40% and an increase in the online sports betting levy from 15% to 25%. Evoke's boss, Per Widerstrm, warned that further increases—especially a potential rise in machine games duty (MTD) to 40%—could have severe consequences for jobs and livelihoods. Evoke has already closed 270 William Hill shops and reported a 7% drop in revenue, which it largely attributes to the high taxation environment created by recent Budget changes.
