Spain Advances Centralized Gambling Controls with March 2027 Integration Deadline
Summary
Spain's Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ) has entered the testing phase of a centralized common deposit limits system and a new Player Portal for online gamblers under Royal Decree 520/2026. The system aggregates player activity across all licensed operators, with default deposit limits of €700 daily, €1,750 weekly, and €3,300 over four weeks, and blocks further deposits once thresholds are met. Limit increases or removals take effect only after three working days, with increases capped at one application every three months. The Player Portal provides a single location to review deposits, stakes, winnings, losses, activity histories, and aggregated statistics, and allows users to identify all gambling accounts registered in their name to flag potential identity theft. Operators have criticized the DGOJ for insufficient consultation and technical guidance, while DGOJ Director General Mikel Arana noted that industry body Jdigital did not engage adequately in early consultations. With the fixed compliance deadline of March 25, 2027, operators face execution risk if they delay integration, and must allocate resources to API connections and testing to avoid compliance gaps and service interruptions.
