Macau Casino GGR Falls 10% in October Despite Visitor Growth and Peak Hotel Occupancy
Summary
Macau's casino gross gaming revenue (GGR) declined 10% year-on-year in October to MOP 21.68 billion ($2.69 billion), despite a 20% month-on-month increase from September. This marks the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year declines, occurring even as visitor arrivals rose during the National Day Golden Week and hotel occupancy exceeded 90%. Year-to-date GGR remains 1.6% higher than the previous year. To meet the government's full-year budget of MOP 236 billion ($29.2 billion), average monthly GGR of MOP 13.6 billion ($1.69 billion) is needed in November and December, though totals would still fall below 2025's MOP 247.4 billion ($30.7 billion). The softness is attributed to a shift toward low-spending and non-gaming visitors, the transition away from the VIP junket model, rising fuel prices, and geopolitical tensions. The NBA China Games at The Venetian Macao also failed to boost revenues as hoped. The industry faces the challenge of converting higher visitor volumes into increased gaming spend while balancing diversification goals.
