Teo: MCMC takes down 724,879 online gambling content, blocks 2,603 websites
Summary
Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching told the Dewan Rakyat that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) took down 724,879 online gambling-related items between January 1, 2025, and October 31, 2026, accounting for 98% of the 738,372 takedown requests submitted. During the same period, MCMC blocked 2,603 gambling websites in collaboration with service providers and enforcement agencies. Teo said the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is the main enforcement agency under the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, while MCMC carries out regulatory action under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and the Online Safety Act 2025. From January to July 2026, 573 gambling websites were blocked and 253,424 gambling-related items were taken down. MCMC also provides investigative assistance, information sharing, and digital forensic analysis to PDRM, and participates in integrated operations including Op JOL, Op Soga XI, Op Pancing, and Op Delusi. Responding to a proposal to strengthen cooperation between MCMC, Bank Negara Malaysia, banking institutions, and enforcement agencies to block accounts and transactions linked to gambling syndicates, Teo said the proposal is being studied.
