Online gambling more than doubles among young Montreal men, study finds
Summary
A new public health study surveying 8,500 Montreal adults found that overall gambling participation dropped to 39 percent in 2025, down 15 percent from 2018 and 2002. However, online gambling among men aged 18 to 34 more than doubled. Researcher Sylvia Kairouz of Concordia University attributed the rise to the ease of phone access and abundant advertising. Anne Elizabeth Lapointe of Maison Jean Lapointe, a treatment organization, reported more young men seeking help for online gambling addiction, and even minors are gambling online. The study found 75 percent of respondents wished gambling advertisements did not exist, and experts called for bans or stricter regulation, citing Spain and Belgium as examples. Kairouz advised setting a budget and noted that the house always wins. Help is available in Quebec through Gambling: Help and Referral.
