SURVEY | How much do YOU spend gambling online – and WHERE?
Summary
National Treasury in South Africa has identified online gambling as a growing addiction problem, fueled by the 24/7 accessibility of digital betting platforms. The National Gambling Board reports a total wager of R1.5 trillion in the 2024/25 financial year, a 31.3% increase year-on-year, with betting accounting for 75% of this turnover. Gross gambling revenue has surged by 390% to R51.97 billion. To address this, Treasury proposes a 20% national tax on gross gambling revenue from online betting, adding to existing provincial taxes and raising the effective tax rate to 26-29%. This measure aims to curb gambling-related harm and improve regulation of the expanding online gambling sector.
