Strip casino agrees to $7.2M settlement with regulators over illegal bookmaker
Summary
The current operators of The Venetian have agreed to a $7.2 million settlement with Nevada gaming regulators following violations related to convicted bookmaker Mathew Bowyer. Between 2019 and 2021, Bowyer wagered millions of dollars at the property, during which time a casino host failed to report his illegal activities and the casino failed to verify his source of funds.
This settlement is part of a larger pattern of penalties involving Bowyer, whose activities have resulted in $34 million in total fines across four different Strip operators, including MGM Resorts International and Caesars Entertainment Inc. Bowyer, who was recently released from prison, is now on Nevada's "Black Book," permanently barring him from state casinos.
The current owners, Apollo Global Management and Vici Properties, assumed liability for these actions following their acquisition of the resort from Las Vegas Sands Corp. The settlement now awaits final approval from the Nevada Gaming Commission.
