Alberta launches regulated iGaming market, opening the doors to online gambling operators
Summary
Alberta has officially launched a regulated iGaming market, making it the second Canadian province, after Ontario, to allow private online gambling operators. The new system, overseen by the Alberta Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Commission (ALGC), aims to protect bettors by providing a regulated space with consumer protections, such as self-exclusion programs and wagering limits.
The province expects to collect 20 per cent of company revenues, forecasting a $76-million increase in provincial funds during the first year. A portion of these funds will be allocated to problem gambling programs and First Nations. While the move aims to capture revenue previously lost to offshore sites, experts note that online gambling models may have a smaller local economic footprint compared to physical casinos.
Major operators like FanDuel and DraftKings are entering the market with community donations, while some companies, such as Estonia-based Coolbet, have exited the province due to the new regulations. The government emphasizes that the primary goal is player safety and responsibility rather than just revenue generation.
