Scottish Borders Council website carried links to offshore casino sites
Summary
BBC Scotland discovered that 16 links on the Scottish Borders Council website were redirecting users to offshore casino sites, bypassing UK gambling laws. The council removed the links after being alerted, but did not comment. Cyber security expert Dr Daniel Thomas described the incident as "domain squatting," where expired domains are bought to attract traffic. Fifteen of the affected sites were hosted on the defunct "Online Borders" platform, which now funnels users to "noGamstop" casinos. The only site not on that platform, Chirnside Community Council, was redirected to an Indonesian site called Joyslot88. The council later issued a memo asking community councils to update their websites.
