The Campaign for Fairer Gambling (CFG) released a report revealing that the UK’s illegal gambling market now holds approximately 9% of the total market share, based on data from the first half of 2025. This growth is strongly linked to illegal streaming of sports events, with 1.6 billion illegal stream views recorded in the first half of 2025 alone, a significant increase from 3.1 billion in all of 2024. A concerning 89% of these streams contain malware and spyware, endangering viewers and undermining legitimate broadcasters. The report highlights that illegal gambling platforms often target vulnerable individuals, including underage players and those who have self-excluded. CFG founder Derek Webb criticized the Gambling Commission and the Betting and Gaming Council for previously ignoring warnings about the black market, and GCI president Ismail Vali expressed concern over the approaching 10% market share and its impact on vulnerable audiences, advocating for improved monitoring and enforcement.
