Bally’s Wants To Extend River North Stay As Permanent Casino Might Not Open Until 2027
Summary
Bally’s Chicago casino is requesting an extension to continue operating its temporary location at the Medinah Temple in River North, as the opening of its permanent casino in River West is now projected for 2027. A bill introduced by State Rep. Kam Buckner proposes allowing the temporary casino to remain open for up to another year, with potential six-month and three-month extensions. This is a precaution due to construction delays stemming from issues like relocating the hotel tower, a demolition spill, and the termination of a vendor with alleged mob ties. The extension would ensure Bally’s remains compliant with its community host agreement, which requires a continuous casino operation until the permanent site is completed.
Bally’s initially opened the temporary casino in 2023, anticipating a transition in September 2024. The company also faced challenges with an investment offering aimed at women and minorities, ultimately submitting a revised plan prioritizing Chicago and Illinois residents.
Bally’s won Chicago’s casino bid in 2022, promising nearly $200 million in annual city payouts. The planned permanent casino will feature 3,300 slots, 173 table games, a 500-room hotel, and various entertainment and dining options. Despite generating $125 million in revenue and $15.8 million in tax revenue for the city last year, it falls short of initial projections by the Lightfoot administration.
