Former Liverpool and Leeds United defender Dominic Matteo will participate in a new League of Ireland gambling awareness programme, sharing his personal story of accumulating over €1million in gambling debts, as detailed in his autobiography. The programme, endorsed by the FAI, National League Committee, and PFA Ireland, aims to proactively prevent gambling harm within Irish football. Matteo will conduct in-person sessions with current players, alongside former Wrexham striker Marc Williams and ex-Ireland Under-21 international Scott Davies, both of whom have also publicly discussed their gambling struggles. The initiative, funded by Flutter, will include 70 workshops for senior teams, academies, and development leagues, as well as training for coaches, match officials, and FAI staff, delivered by EPIC Global Solutions and adhering to UEFA standards.
