Casino self-exclusion requests hit record high in 2025
Summary
Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) reported a significant surge in casino self-exclusion applications in 2025, totaling 952 requests – the highest number since the system’s inception in 2012. This figure represents a substantial year-on-year increase of almost 68%. The vast majority, 828 applications (approximately 87%), were voluntary submissions from gamblers seeking to restrict their casino access, while 124 were initiated by concerned third parties, such as family members. Both voluntary and third-party applications reached record highs. The DICJ observed a relatively consistent flow of applications throughout the year, with a noticeable increase during the third quarter, processing 236 requests in the final three months, including 210 self-exclusions. This trend continues the growth observed in 2024, which saw 567 applications, a 14.8% increase from 2023. Since the law’s implementation in November 2012, the DICJ has processed a total of 5,789 requests, with self-exclusions consistently representing around 87% of the total. Current legislation allows individuals to be excluded from casinos for up to two years, either by their own volition or through applications from close relatives.
