This change occurred after the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey (CCGNJ), which owned the trademark for 1-800-GAMBLER since 1983, ended a licensing agreement with the NCPG and won a subsequent legal battle. The NCPG had used 1-800-GAMBLER since 2022 and attempted to renew the agreement, but the CCGNJ did not cooperate. The NCPG views 1-800-MY-RESET as a more “neutral, non-stigmatizing, and user-defined” number, emphasizing that support is available at any stage of a gambling problem. The NCPG now faces the challenge of raising public awareness of the new number, as 1-800-GAMBLER had become widely recognized, and transitioning will be a slow process due to varying state regulations and the continued display of the old number on gambling platforms.
