Online gambling tax fixes to take effect March 1
Summary
Estonian lawmakers are preparing to approve a technical fix to the Gambling Tax Act, reinstating taxes on online casinos. A recent amendment, introduced by MP Tanel Tein, addresses a wording error adopted in late 2023 that unintentionally exempted online casinos from taxation. The amendment clarifies that both games of chance and games of skill offered remotely will be subject to the same 5.5 percent gambling tax. The Finance Committee adjusted the effective date to March 1, 2026, to align with existing IT systems and operating practices of market participants and the Estonian Tax and Customs Board (MTA). This correction is linked to legislation passed in December aimed at increasing funding for sports and culture through gambling tax revenues, and is expected to restore legal clarity for operators and the tax authority.
