Macon development authority gives casino company $20M option to buy site at Macon Mall
Summary
The Macon-Bibb County Urban Development Authority (UDA) has taken a significant step towards potentially bringing a casino to Macon, Georgia, by granting Gaming and Leisure Properties (GLPI) a $20 million option to buy the site of the former J.C. Penney store at Macon Mall. This option lasts for ten years, contingent on the Georgia General Assembly approving casino gambling within the state. Mayor Lester Miller noted that lawmakers are considering casinos as a potential revenue source alongside proposed tax cuts. GLPI, a subsidiary of PENN Entertainment, plans to invest up to $2.5 million in demolishing the existing structure and preparing the site if the casino is approved.
In addition to the casino proposal, the UDA approved a $40,000 feasibility study, conducted by Woodworth Core Group, for a new Macon arena, convention center, and hotel. This study will assess the costs and potential revenue of these projects to secure financing and minimize taxpayer exposure. The UDA emphasized the importance of attracting visitors and boosting local businesses through these venues.
Further updates included progress on the Rhythm & Rally pickleball facility’s courtside restaurant and the selection of decorative tiles for the new parking deck behind City Hall. The UDA is also addressing pedestrian safety by installing spikes at a parking garage exit and enhancing downtown sidewalks.
