Nearly a third of Pennsylvania gamblers are at risk of problem gambling − but few seek treatment
Summary
A recent report from Penn State and the University of Kentucky, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs, reveals a growing concern regarding problem gambling in Pennsylvania. While most Pennsylvanians still gamble offline, online gambling has tripled in recent years, with approximately 30% of adults now participating. The study found that between 2.5% and 6.4% of adults meet the criteria for problem gambling, and nearly 30% are considered ‘at-risk.’ Notably, those who gamble both online and offline (mixed-mode gamblers) are more likely to experience gambling-related problems and spend more money. Despite these concerning numbers, help-seeking rates are extremely low, with only about 6% of problem gamblers reporting they sought assistance. Young men are identified as particularly vulnerable due to the accessibility and convenience of online platforms. The researchers emphasize that increased availability of gambling, like with alcohol and cannabis, expands both experimentation and harmful engagement.
