Hong Kong police deploy drones for first time to tackle illicit street gambling
Summary
Hong Kong police have initiated a new strategy in their fight against illegal street gambling, deploying drones for the first time to identify and monitor gambling hotspots. This operation, codenamed JusticePeak, took place between April 5th and 18th, and resulted in the arrest of eight suspects – seven men and one woman – ranging in age from 53 to 76. The arrests occurred in the Chung On Estate, where officers seized HK$420 (US$54) in cash and gambling equipment. Police stated that the use of drones allowed them to effectively patrol and pinpoint locations of illegal gambling activities. Each suspect has been charged with gambling in a public space, and authorities have pledged to continue strengthening patrols and enforcement efforts against illegal gambling.
